Before arriving in Miami for our January 2018 Disney cruise, we added an extra day to our trip. We did this to spend a day Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. Why only one day? Why Animal Kingdom?
The previous spring, an Avatar-themed section opened in Animal Kingdom - Pandora: The World of Avatar (based on the James Cameron’s 2009 film, which everyone in our family loves, especially my older daughter). Jo had been at Animal Kingdom the previous past spring, but sadly she missed Pandora’s opening by just two weeks! Anyways, below is my review of Pandora.
Experiencing Pandora Firsthand
Pandora has a couple of rides. Avatar Flight of Passage is without a doubt the best, coolest, craziest VR/ 4D ride in any Disney Park. No joke, the ride is better than Star Wars, Soarin’, Mission to Mars, and every other Disney ride like this that I’ve ever been on. Since Pandora and the ride are so new, people line up for hours to ride it.
Even though the park officially opened at 9:00 am, we arrived at around 8:15 and headed straight to Pandora to wait for the section to open, which it did around 8:30.
Then we only waited in line for an hour for Flight of Passage. I say ‘only’ because when we got off the ride, the wait time was 4 hours!
When we visited Pandora, you could only use FastPasses for one of the Avatar rides in a single day. So later in the day when the park was more crowded, we used our FastPass for the Nav’i River Journey. This an Avatar-themed boat ride is similar to the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and It’s a Small World (but cooler than all of them put together). Almost EVERYTHING glows in the dark to mimic the nighttime bioluminescence of the planet Pandora.
Pandora After Dark
And speaking of bioluminescent, after dark, all of Pandora glows with black lights and other lighting! Words and photos can’t do justice to the coolness!
Our Short Trip to WDW
Because this was our third time as a family to Animal Kingdom, we basically only rode the Pandora rides plus all of our favorites - Expedition Everest, Primeval Whirl, and the Safari. Thankfully we got to see the evening Rivers of Light water-and-light show as well.
Also on this short WDW trip, we spent two nights at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside resort which is directly adjacent to Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter resort. Both resorts are modeled after the Big Easy and are convenient to both Disney Springs and Epcot with a direct boat to Disney Springs.
See Pandora for Yourself

I love sci-fi and themes parks. So this Pandora experience was amazing!
