On our first family cruise, we sailed on Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas. The 3-night weekend cruise from Miami would stop in Nassau, Bahamas.
But first, it would stop at CocoCay, RC's very own private island! All four of us were super stoked about spending an entire day on a tropical island, swimming, soaking up the sun, and loving every minute.
The first morning of our cruise was our CocoCay day. Since we wanted to make the most of our day, we all got up early to eat breakfast. In the forward-facing dining room at the front of the ship, we looked out over the bow as the ship approached the island.
As we gazed out over CocoCay's white sand beaches, we could see that it was a bit windy. Not thinking too much about it, we kept eating, ready for our perfect day at CocoCay. Then, an announcement came over the PA:
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain. Due to high winds, we won't be able to tender you to CocoCay. We regret this situation. Instead, we will continue on to Nassau.
Being so close to a tropical island, but not being allowed to go there was heartbreaking.
I'm pretty sure my younger daughter (and maybe Jo) cried a little. You're probably thinking, that's a huge bummer. It was because our perfect day on CocoCay Island was ruined before it ever started.
Sadly, this disappointment isn't unique to our cruise. Without an actual dock, many cruise ships can't go to certain places. Instead, passengers are tendered, or taken on smaller boats, to these destinations. For many years, cruisers have dealt with this same weather-related disappointment if ships can’t dock directly at a destination.
Perfect Day at CocoCay island Overhaul
You'll walk right of the ship (like you can at Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line's private island) without apologies from the captain. No disappointment! No tears!
